Start with your family size
An air fryer is a small, strong fan oven. Hot air moves around the food and crisps the outside. That means food needs space. If you pile it up, the top crisps and the bottom stays soft.
So buy for the amount you cook at one time, not for the amount you could squeeze in. This is a rough guide. Your own cooking habits matter more.
| Family | Size to look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 people | About 4 litres | Enough for snacks and small meals |
| 4 to 5 people | About 6 litres | Fewer batches at tea time |
| 6 or more, or guests often | 7 litres or more, oven style | Racks give you more flat space |
Also measure your counter. Small Indian kitchens fill up quickly, and an air fryer needs clear space around it, because hot air comes out of the vent.
Basket or oven style?
| Basket style | Oven style | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Food sits in one pull-out drawer | Food sits on racks behind a door |
| Suits | Small batches, fries, snacks | Tikkas in flat layers, larger amounts |
| You will need to | Shake or turn food halfway | Swap or turn racks halfway |
| Watch out for | Limited flat space | Takes more counter, more parts to clean |
A window lets you check food without opening anything. This is useful with paneer, which can dry out quickly.

What works with Indian food
| Food | Result to expect | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Paneer tikka, chicken tikka | Works well | Use a thick marinade, shake off the extra |
| Frozen samosas, fries, nuggets | Works well | No need to thaw most of them |
| Aloo tikki, cutlets | Works well | Brush with a little oil |
| Fish pieces | Works well | Coat with rava or crumbs and turn once |
| Reheating samosas, pakoras | Works well | Crisper than a microwave |
| Roasted peanuts, makhana | Works with care | Light food can blow around, so check often |
| Papad | Works with care | Hold it down with a rack |
| Pakoras in wet batter | Poor | Batter drips before it sets |
| Puri, bhatura | Poor | They need hot oil to puff up |
| Jalebi, medu vada | Poor | Wet batter does not hold its shape |
Food comes out crisp, but not the same as deep frying. If your family judges a samosa by the kadhai version, try reheating and frozen snacks first, then decide what else it can replace.
Getting good results
- Preheat when the recipe says so. A cold basket makes food stick.
- Use a little oil. A brush of oil on cutlets and tikkas helps them brown.
- Do not crowd the basket. One flat layer crisps better than a heap.
- Watch the paneer. Too much heat dries it out before it browns, so start lower.
- Clean after each use. Old marinade left in the basket can burn and smell the next time.
Watts and running cost
The wattage on the label is the most the air fryer can draw. It usually switches its heater on and off once it reaches the set temperature, so the real use is often lower.
This table assumes full power. It uses ₹8 per unit as an example. Your rate depends on your state and how much you use, so check your bill.
| Power | Units in 20 minutes | Cost in 20 minutes | Cost for 30 days of 20 minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1200 watts | 0.4 | ₹3.20 | ₹96 |
| 1500 watts | 0.5 | ₹4 | ₹120 |
| 1800 watts | 0.6 | ₹4.80 | ₹144 |
If you were going to use a full-size oven for the same snack, a small air fryer can heat up faster. Against a gas stove, the cost depends on your cylinder price, so compare your own numbers.
Checks before you buy
- Socket. Plug it straight into a wall socket that suits the wattage, not an extension board.
- Inverter. Many home inverters cannot run 1500 watts or more, so plan for power cuts.
- Temperature range. Check that it goes low enough for reheating and high enough for tikkas.
- Cleaning. Check whether the basket or trays are dishwasher safe, and how the marinade drips are collected.
- Coating. Read what the basket is coated with, and use wooden or silicone tools so you do not scratch it.
- Spare parts. Ask if a new basket is available and where the nearest service centre is.
Before you buy
Write down three things your family will really cook every week. If they are mostly dry snacks and tikkas, an air fryer can save time. If they are mostly gravies and rotis, it may sit in a cupboard. Then choose the smallest size that handles one normal batch.

Common questions
What size air fryer does a family of four need?
As a rough guide, about 6 litres. Food crisps only when hot air can reach it, so a small basket means cooking in several batches.
Can I make pakoras or puris in an air fryer?
Not in the usual way. A wet batter drips through the basket, and a puri needs hot oil to puff up. Dry, coated snacks such as cutlets work much better.
How much electricity does an air fryer use?
A 1500 watt air fryer running flat out for 20 minutes uses 0.5 units. At an example rate of ₹8 per unit, that is ₹4. Check your own bill for your rate.
Can I run an air fryer on a home inverter?
Often not. Many home inverters cannot supply 1500 watts or more. Check your inverter's rating against the wattage of the air fryer before you try.
