First, does your home pass?
A robot vacuum can be very handy or a costly toy. The difference is usually your floor and your habits, not the brand.
| Your home | What it means |
|---|---|
| Tile, marble or granite floors | A good match. Flat hard floors are easy for a robot |
| Raised door thresholds | It may be stuck in one room. Measure them first |
| Wires, chargers and toys on the floor | You must clear these before each run |
| Box beds and low sofas | It cannot clean there |
| Thick or fringed rugs | Tassels can tangle in the brush. Roll them up or block the area |
| Pets at home | A mess on the floor can get dragged around. Check before each run |
| Daily house help | The robot mainly helps between visits or on days off |
Dust in Indian homes
Many Indian homes get fine dust through open windows and balconies every day, more so near a main road or a building site. Hard floors show it quickly, which is why many homes sweep daily. A robot deals with this well, because a daily run stops dust from building up.
A small onboard bin can fill fast, and fine dust clogs the filter, so plan to clean both often.
Thresholds and furniture: get a measuring tape
Many robots climb only about 2 cm, and some manage more. Check the figure for the model you want, then measure:
- Door thresholds. Marble strips between rooms and raised bathroom edges often stop a robot.
- Gap under the sofa and bed. Measure it, then compare with the height on the listing. A LiDAR tower on top adds to the height.
- Space for the dock. It needs a plug point nearby and clear floor around it. Self-empty docks are large.
Wires and small things
Phone chargers, dupattas, socks and small toys can all stop a robot or wrap around its brush. If your floor is rarely clear, it will often stop mid-run. Tying up wires near the TV unit and desk once saves a lot of trouble.
What mopping can and cannot do
A robot mop mostly wipes the floor with a damp pad. That is useful for light dust and footprints. It is much weaker on:
- Dried stains and sticky spots
- Oil and turmeric marks on a kitchen floor
- Grout lines and corners
- Bathroom floors, which robots should stay out of
Pads also need washing, or they spread dirty water around. Docks that wash mops do this for you, but they need filling and cleaning too.
How it finds its way
| Navigation | How it works | Point to note |
|---|---|---|
| LiDAR | A spinning laser maps the room | Works in the dark, and adds height |
| Camera | Maps using what it sees | Needs light. Read the privacy settings |
| Basic sensors | Bumps around in a rough pattern | Can miss areas and take longer |
A map lets you mark no-go zones, which helps around a puja corner or a child's play area. Some models need a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network for setup, so check this if your router uses only one combined name.
High suction numbers such as 25000 Pa look impressive, but they are a listed peak. On tiles, fine dust does not need the top setting, which is also the loudest and drains the battery fastest. Do not choose on this figure alone.

Self-empty docks
A self-empty dock pulls dust out of the robot into a bag or bin inside the dock, so you empty it less often. The trade-offs are a larger box on the floor, a short burst of loud noise after each run, and the extra cost of dust bags on many models.
The running cost sum
The robot is not the last thing you pay for. These parts wear out, and the times below are typical guidance only. Your manual has the real figures, and dusty homes may need them sooner.
| Part | Usually replaced |
|---|---|
| Side brush | Every 3 to 6 months |
| Main brush | Every 6 to 12 months |
| Filter | Every 2 to 3 months |
| Dust bag (self-empty docks) | Every 1 to 3 months |
| Mop pads | When worn |
Search for each spare on Amazon under the exact model name before you buy. Then add up one year: for example 4 filters, 2 side brushes, 1 main brush and 6 dust bags. If spares are hard to find today, they will be harder in two years.
Next, do the time sum. Twenty minutes of sweeping a day is about 10 hours a month. That is the time you could get back, minus the minutes spent clearing the floor and emptying the bin.
Before you buy
Check for a service centre in your city, since a robot is hard to ship back for repair. Read the warranty on the battery as well as on the robot itself.

Common questions
Can a robot vacuum replace daily jhadu and pocha?
It can take over much of the daily dust. Most homes still need a proper hand mop for sticky spots, corners and kitchen floors, so think of it as help between deep cleans.
Will it work during a power cut?
It runs on its battery, so a cut will not stop a cleaning run. But the dock cannot charge it or empty it until the power returns.
Do I need a self-empty dock?
Not always. It helps if your home gets a lot of dust, because a small onboard bin fills quickly. It costs more, needs floor space and may use dust bags.
